Marriage, Poker and Latin

            Marriage, poker and Latin.

There’s a theme here.  I promise.  Of sorts, anyway.

Just the other day, I was reading a little bit of law and came across, once again, the word “antenuptials.”  That got me to wondering.

I’ve heard a whole lot about prenuptials but not about antenuptials.  So, I wondered what the difference was.

Most of us have heard about prenuptials, or prenups, even if we don’t know anyone who ever signed ‘em.  We know they are agreements two people sign before they get married to determine who gets what if the marriage doesn’t work out.

I wasn’t sure about the other word – antenuptials – though.

In high school, I took the typing course, just so I wouldn’t have to take Latin.  Turns out that it was a great decision because I’ve used typing in just about everything I’ve done since then.

But typing hasn’t helped me figure out words and meanings; Latin might have done that.

So, as I was wondering about antenuptials, I thought about playing poker and certain other card games.  A player puts his chips – or money – in the pot before the hand begins.  That’s called “ante-ing up.” (Gee, I’ve never tried to spell that word before; it looks odd.)

Over at the state house in Columbia, there’s a small room just outside the Senate chamber.  It’s called the “antechamber.”  It’s a little conference room just before the big chamber.  So, I was thinking that “ante” must have something to do with “before.”

And most of us have heard of “antebellum,” typically used to describe those big Southern mansions that existed before the Civil War.  There we have it:  “before.”
Just a few weeks ago, I had spinal surgery called “anterior cervical fusion.”  There was another “ante-something.”  Since the surgeon went in through the throat area to work on the cervical spine, I guessed “anterior” meant before, which it does.  It means before or in front of.  It’s the opposite of “posterior,” and that, of course, means behind.

And then, right in the midst of all of this wondering, the word “antelope” came to mind.  An antelope is a big animal with horns.  But, if a person “lopes,” he is just running along.

So, after all of this wondering, I don’t know how the antelope got its name; I know that antenuptials and prenuptials are the same thing.

And I know that marriage and poker have a lot in common.

It's the Match Game, And I Keep Losing!

I’ve just finished playing a game. I lost. I always lose.

It’s the “Match Game,” but it’s not like the one that used to be televised.

We often play our own version of the televised game when family and friends are gathered, and it ends up being hilarious. Like when all players are supposed to write down a color. About half usually write red; most of the others typically write blue.

But one lone player will come up with something like teal or black or pink. No matches there.

Or name something you might buy.  Several people might write clothes or a car or various other things.  If one player happens to select vacuum cleaner, it's pretty much a given that there won't be a match.

The object, of course, is to score the most points by having the highest number of matches at the end of the game. It’s a simple game that sounds boring but is actually fun.

What’s not fun is the version I keep playing and losing.

It involves trying to match up The Duppster’s socks after taking them out of the dryer. Like I said, I always lose.

I’ve never seen the winner – the hidden “someone” who takes individual socks out of the dryer, then hides them,  never to be seen again.

Aside from always having an uneven number after the drying cycle, there’s still the unbelievable chore of matching up the socks that made it through.

Do you know how many different shades of navy blue exist in this world? Well, I don’t know either, but however many there are, The Duppster found ‘em all!

Not only that, he’s found a dark, dark navy blue that is extremely close to black, but not close enough to be an exact match.

Finally, when I occasionally find exact color matches, I end up having one sock with thin lines and another with thick lines. Or one with ribbing and one without. Or maybe I find matching patterns, but, once again, mismatched colors.

There’s a whole lot of effort involved in matching up these socks.

If you ever run into The Duppster and you’re surprised to see him in a button-down shirt with a tie, a blazer and shorts, just know it’s because I want somebody to see that he has on matching socks!

How Did You Meet Your Toad, Er, I Mean Mate?

How did you meet your true love?

If your match-making efforts occurred decades ago, they probably weren’t through a site like eHarmony or match.com, were they?

These days, more and more people are turning to on-line opportunities to meet potential companions. This is especially true for those who are on the second-time around (or third or fourth) and for those who are, um, “older.”

People over 40 or 50 are in a quandary:

1. We’ve forgotten what it was like to date.

2. What “rules” we happen to remember no longer apply.

3. There aren’t many places to go to meet potential “candidates” of a similar age.

4. Most of us aren’t interested in playing games that many younger folks play.

5. If we wanted to play, we probably wouldn’t even know how.

6. For what reason would anyone feign innocence at such an age as ours?

7. Most places for socializing don’t even open until past our bedtimes.

Some people frown on the on-line meeting and dating process. I understand that. I’ve tried three different sites – and have met some unusual inhabitants of this planet. At least, I think they were all from this planet, although it was questionable in one or two cases.

During these adventures, I’ve had some bad experiences as well as some good ones. And, thank goodness, I’m still alive to write about them.

Initially, it’s impossible to know how truthful people are being about themselves. It’s always important to play it safe.

One woman said, “You have to kiss a lot of toads to find your prince.”

That, my friend, is usually true whether you’re looking on-line for a partner or through more traditional methods. In the meantime, just try to avoid the warts.

WW: Triviaholics

It's an understatement to say that I'm a triviaholic.
Fortunately, I've got friends who fit into the same category and I've made new friends when playing trivia.
I play live or team trivia at some places and also participate in nationwide (and more) Buzztime Trivia.

On most Wednesdays, some of us get together for team trivia at Firewater Grille.  Here are some of the other triviaholics.  (Actually, team trivia is played there every Wednesday; I am able to show up only most Wednesdays.)

On Thursdays, I host team trivia at Ivory Moon.  That's 6:30 - 7:30 pm.  Some of these same people join us on Thursdays as well.

First is our funny trivia host at Firewater, Shane Griffin.

One of the Wednesday teams is The Bill-Z.

Another regular team - The Mulligans:

Our team is regular but we can't decide on a regular name; we change every week:

And here's one shot with various members of some of the teams:

It's what you'd call competitive friendship!

WordlessWednesday participants are here.

Wordful Wednesday participants are here.

PH: How Low Can You Go?

This week's PhotoHunt theme is LOW and I've selected a variety of uses of that word for all of these photos.

Which card is low? Well, it depends on what game you're playing?

Here are my scales. When I stand on the scales, the number is never LOW enough!!!

There was a full moon this week. By the time I took this photo in the early, early morning, the moon was LOW.

Our part of South Carolina is called the Lowcountry. The Lowcountry is an area of beaches, old homes, magnificent trees, gorgeous flowers and so much more. So, here are a few Lowcountry scenes.

The walls in my house have Lowcountry scenes as well.

And, speaking of low, here's our South Carolina governor, Mark Sanford, the one who said he was out hiking the Appalachian Trail on Father's Day weekend. Instead of the trail or home with his wife and four sons, he was in Argentina with his mistress - and no one knew how to get in touch with him for 5 days! He neglected his family and our state. How LOW can you go?
