A Day for Squares - Roots, That Is

Woo-hoo! Today is Square Root Day!! How will you celebrate?

Here's the AP article about the special occasion as it appeared in The Sun News (Myrtle Beach, SC):

"3/3/09: Math fans to celebrate Square Root Day
The Associated Press

Dust off the slide rules and recharge the calculators. Square Root Day is upon us.
The math-buffs' holiday, which only occurs nine times each century, falls on Tuesday - 3/3/09 (for the mathematically challenged, three is the square root of nine).
"These days are like calendar comets, you wait and wait and wait for them, then they brighten up your day - and poof - they're gone," said Ron Gordon, a Redwood City teacher who started a contest meant to get people excited about the event.
The winner gets, of course, $339 for having the biggest Square Root Day event.
Gordon's daughter even set up a Facebook page - one of a half-dozen or so dedicated to the holiday - and hundreds of people had signed up with plans to celebrate in some way. Celebrations are as varied: Some cut root vegetables into squares, others make food in the shape of a square root symbol.
The last such day was five years ago, Feb. 2, 2004, which coincided with Groundhog Day. The next is seven years away, on April 4, 2016."

Now, don't you just feel like going out and celebrating, setting off fireworks or doing something special?

Yeah, right.

It would be much more appropriate for me to celebrate National Square Day -- 'cause I know lots more about being a square than I do about square roots.

I had enough math in college. Why I ever decided to major in business management is a puzzle. Do you know how much math there is? Way too much.

I think I'll celebrate by having chocolate. Yep, that sounds good. Any old excuse will do.

Have a terrific day. :)

Hey, Hopefully I won't appear pyscho on your comments today! If my first doesn't show up, I'm letting it ride. My two math whizzes are home from school today and are thrilled to have learned about square root day. Root veggies? yummm

Woo hoo!
And pi day is just around the bend (3/14!)
(The food is much better!--chicken pot pie followed by cherry pie? Apple pie?)
Thanks for the reminder!

I heard about this belatedly but it definitely sounds like fun! I've marked pi day on my calendar ... just because ;--)
Hugs and blessings,
