Have you ever taken a road or route a second or third time and noticed something “new” – that, of course, had been there all along?
We often go at such a fast pace that we fail to really see things around us.
That, at least for me, is what the weekly PhotoHunt in the world of blogs is all about.
I thought about this today when Mom said she thought it was somewhat “silly.” That’s probably because she likes for me to write, write, write. I don’t do much of that on Saturdays when participating in the PhotoHunt, so that's probably why it isn't her favorite thing.
Here’s an example: I’ve lived in Summerville, SC, for about eight years. Not long ago, when the PhotoHunt theme was “yellow,” I wondered what in the world I would use on my blog. I couldn’t think of anything!
As I went on a daily walk around town – camera in hand – I saw more yellow than I had ever seen before. Yellow signs, yellow flowers, yellow lights.
In other words, this weekly little exercise opens my eyes and makes me more aware of my surroundings.
This week’s theme is “utensils.” I took a picture of some of my wooden utensils in a container and planned to use that. Not very creative.
And then, as I walked through the kitchen, I glanced at something I have owned since 1973; it’s a favorite of mine. It came from Taylor's Hardware in Lexington.
For all those years, I had noticed the man, his hands folded in prayer; the bread, the bowl of soup, the book and even his eyeglasses. Until today, I don’t think I had ever really seen the two utensils – the spoon in the soup and the knife for the bread. Well, perhaps I had seen the knife; I’m not certain. But I know I had never noticed the spoon.
Thanks to PhotoHunt, I really looked today!

Wonderful post and pics! I use blog memes for inspiration too and love expressing myself with both words and photos:)
I don't think I'd have noticed the knife and, presumably, spoon either. Good take on the theme.
Beautiful post! I love the painting. Thanks for sharing, enjoy your weekend!
i have to agree with you on that. sometimes, it takes something for us that needed to be done that we start to look closely and see things that we haven't seen them before even if they've been there long before that. great post:)
like that painting take on the theme!
Great post, and you are SO right! I do try to look at details, but it IS amazing how easily they are not noticed. Very true!
Thanks for visiting my PH today! :D
You put your finger on what I like about photohunting and other photoblogging memes. It makes me look at the world around me with a new eye to details. I love your shots for this theme. Happy photohunting.
That's a great post. It always amazes me when we miss things like that. Last week, I noticed a car dealership for the first time. I know I'm new in town, but still, it's kinda hard to miss a car dealership.
I participated in PH, too. Stop by!
Hi Sherry..it is so true about seeing things on a second look that you hadn't noticed before..Lovely series...Funny..I didn't think of my canister of cooking utensils that is always on my counter..lol...Michelle
I love your take on the theme. It's always great when you look at something you have seen for years then notice something new. Happy weekend (belatedly!)
I know EXACTLY what you mean...ever since I started into photography, I see EVERYTHING in a different light (no pun intended). I appreciate texture, color, detail....so much more.
I really like your pictures. What you said about noticing things is so true.
My utensils are here. Not nearly as creative as yours.
I'm new to photography and photohunting..it's fun! I just thought I'd say hi and I enjoy looking at your shots. :) Feel free to check out my first ever entry... http://ishotthese.blogspot.com/2009/07/photohunt-utensils.html . thanks.
